The Michell Gyro has never stood still. Since its debut in the early 1980s, it has evolved through countless refinements, each designed to improve performance while preserving its original design philosophy. Over the decades, its unmistakable silhouette has become an icon of high-end analogue playback.
The latest Gyro represents its most significant evolution yet. Rather than reinventing a classic, Michell has reimagined nearly everything beneath the surface, introducing major improvements in performance, usability, and long-term reliability while remaining true to the original design.
You know it's a Gyro at a glance. Look closer, and listen, and you'll discover just how much has changed.
A Chassis Redefined
At the heart of the latest Gyro is a completely redesigned main chassis. Replacing the cast aluminium construction of previous generations is a solid 19mm aerospace-grade aluminium tooling plate, precision-machined for exceptional accuracy, rigidity, and resonance control.
Carefully positioned brass counterweights help balance the tonearm assembly while optimizing the chassis' resonance behaviour. Foam damping inserts surrounding the tonearm mounting area further suppress unwanted reflections and vibrations.
Together, these refinements create a more stable platform for vinyl playback, allowing subtle musical textures and fine details to emerge with greater clarity.
Advanced Suspension & Vibration Control
The Gyro's renowned suspended design has been extensively refined to provide even greater isolation from external vibration.
Its re-tuned suspension operates at a frequency of 3.5Hz and incorporates Equilibria lateral damping for improved stability and control. AI-optimized vibration management further enhances the turntable's mechanical performance.
A precision aluminium baseplate replaces the previous acrylic Spider frame, while larger Sorbothane™ isolation feet help reduce the transmission of unwanted vibration.
The platter also features a smoother outer edge, eliminating the traditional belt groove. The drive belt now self-levels during operation for improved consistency and ease of use.
Precision Motor & Isolation
The Gyro's motor system is engineered for exceptional speed stability and quiet operation. Its heavy, freestanding motor housing is completely independent of the turntable, connected only by the drive belt.
This physical separation dramatically reduces the transfer of motor vibration to sensitive playback components, helping preserve musical detail, timing, and clarity.
Both the motor unit and matching power supply are machined from solid billets of aerospace-grade aluminium, creating rigid enclosures designed to minimize unwanted RF interference.
The system is fully grounded and connected through a shielded interconnect, with electronic speed selection providing convenient and precise operation.
